It is done! The industry’s biggest (almost) annual survey has been conducted and the responses were overwhelming. These responses have been captured in a report that is available for free here. The state of the VDI and SBC union 2017 is truly unique because it’s unbiased, independent, powered by the community and the results are available for everyone—free of charge. The state of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Server Based Computing (SBC) union gives valuable insights into real-world deployments, configuration and usage, both on-premises and in public cloud environments, from more than 580 people who completed the survey.

In total, almost a 1000 people started the survey of which 580 completed the survey in less than 15 minutes. Participants from almost 50 different countries around the globe took part in the survey, with most in the EMEA region. Around 30% of respondents are from North America and 70% from EMEA. The response is captured based on client IP-address. In this document, various filters are being used to receive insights based on various regions as well.

North America has the largest response distribution, it is obviously the largest region by far. EMEA, and specifically Benelux, are much smaller, but from a personal and marketing point of view, VDI Like a Pro and its team members are really well connected with end-users, partners and vendors in this region. As an interesting side-note, someone from Swaziland also filled-in the survey. Thanks for the support!

The goal of the survey executed by Ruben Spruijt, CTO Atlantis Computing, and Mark Plettenberg, Product manager Login VSI, is to share insights about usage, configuration and trends in the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and Server Based Computing industry, ‘the State of the VDI and SBC union’. For the first time this year ControlUp also provided valuable information of the usage of VDI and SBC with almost one million concurrent users and more than 800 customers. The results and our information combined are available in the full report. This document combines the results of the survey with our own insights. Some interesting highlights from the report:

Providing DaaS, anywhere access, centralized management and flexible working are the key drivers for VDI usage. While SBC was much more focused on cost-reduction, customers chose other reasons to use VDI. Many companies are evaluating Windows 10 in VDI, both on-premises and in a public cloud. We expect Windows 10 to be a key new driver for stronger VDI adoption.

Smaller VDI deployments are decreasing, likely due to DaaS, mobile and SaaS/web application delivery. SME customers remain steady, while bigger (25.000-99.000) and large enterprise (100.000+) usage of VDI increased. Historical challenges, such as cost, complexity and performance have been solved within VDI.

It’s interesting to see that the world seems to have decided to skip Office 2013 for the most part. People have used Office 2010 long enough to now switch to Office 365/2016. Microsoft Office is the standard and OpenOffice isn’t relevant anymore. Google Works on the other hand is growing, not so much in VDI and SBC, but more on physical devices, such as Chromebooks and other laptops.
